Calder Vets team pumped up for charity bike ride

A team of intrepid cyclists are once again getting ready to go the extra mile in a bid to put both vets and pets on the road to recovery.

Our 12 practices across the county have teamed up with colleagues at Paragon Veterinary Referrals, in Wakefield, to stage the second ‘Tour de Calder Vets’ sponsored bike ride on Sunday, May 20.

Cyclists will ride between four and 54 miles on a route which passes nine of our 12 practices in the county – Dewsbury, Mirfield, Brighouse, Penistone, Denby Dale, Sandal, Wakefield and Horbury.

Last year, the team’s pedal-pushing raised in excess of £1,200, so this time they’re hoping to wheel in even more cash for their chosen charities, Vetlife and Blue Cross.

Veterinary surgeon Gemma Kilby, who is the event’s main organiser, said: “Our ‘Tour de Calder Vets’ was such a success last year that we simply had to do it again.

“It’s going to be a big challenge. The team is riding between four and 54 miles depending on their ability, but we’re all primed and ready to go.

“Everyone has pulled together to make this happen, so it’s a real team effort for two very good causes.

“We work very closely with Blue Cross, who often help us out beyond belief, which is why we feel it’s very important for us to be able to help them out in return.

“Vetlife is a vital charity offering professional mental health support, financial assistance, information and resources to all members of the veterinary profession.

“Mental health issues are all-too common in our profession, which is why the work Vetlife does is so important.”
