{"id":9042,"date":"2020-05-20T17:40:22","date_gmt":"2020-05-20T16:40:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/?p=9042"},"modified":"2026-02-18T16:08:04","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T16:08:04","slug":"kirstywhite","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/kirstywhite\/","title":{"rendered":"Kirsty White &#8211; Registered Veterinary Nurse"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>May is Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month, a whole month dedicated to raising awareness of the veterinary nursing profession and the vital role they play in animal care and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Kirsty White is one of our\u00a0Registered Veterinary Nurses (RVN)\u00a0who works on the Out of Hours\u00a0Emergency\u00a0team\u00a0at\u00a0our\u00a024\/7 Dewsbury\u00a0Hospital.\u202f She kindly took the time to tell us about her life as a\u00a0Registered\u00a0Veterinary\u00a0Nurse.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How long have you been a vet nurse and what route did you follow to qualify?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nI have worked in\u00a0practice for almost\u00a0nine\u00a0years and have been qualified for four years. I joined Calder\u00a0Vets\u00a0as a trainee and completed all my training here whilst visiting Myerscough college on block release.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What attracted you to a career as a veterinary nurse?<\/strong><br \/>\nFrom a very young age, I had always wanted to work in a\u00a0veterinary practice, as do most children. My passion for animals made this possible.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What does your job as emergency night nurse entail?<\/strong><br \/>\nAs part of the night team, we \u202fare responsible for providing high-quality nursing care to routine, critical and trauma patients and assist with imaging and surgical procedures of critical animals.\u202fAn\u202femergency\u202fcan\u00a0present at any point so we must remain calm under pressure. We also\u202f offer a telephone advice service, as well as performing reception duties, cleaning, and in-house laboratory tests.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is the most rewarding part of the job?<\/strong><br \/>\nThe most rewarding part of this job is seeing poorly patients bounce back to health,\u00a0especially those who have been critically ill. I also feel reuniting stray pets with their owners by tracing microchips is very satisfying.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What attributes do you need to be a good vet nurse?<\/strong><br \/>\nYou must be able to multi-task,\u00a0be proactive, hardworking, have good timekeeping skills, work both independently and as part of a team and have a passion for this line of work,\u00a0as it can be very intense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What advice would you give to someone considering a career as a veterinary nurse?\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\nStudy hard for the relevant entry requirements for the path into nursing you wish to follow.\u202f There is a large\u00a0workload<u>,<\/u>\u00a0but it is\u00a0worthwhile;\u00a0keep at it. It is a very demanding job\u00a0with\u00a0long working hours.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the best things about working at Dewsbury\u00a0Hospital?<\/strong><br \/>\nThere is always something different to see; no two patients or conditions are the same.
