{"id":8934,"date":"2020-03-23T07:00:35","date_gmt":"2020-03-23T07:00:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/?p=8934"},"modified":"2026-02-18T16:28:12","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T16:28:12","slug":"beloved-pet-rabbit-tristan-recover-from-collapsed-lung","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/beloved-pet-rabbit-tristan-recover-from-collapsed-lung\/","title":{"rendered":"Beloved pet rabbit Tristan recovers from collapsed lung"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A beloved pet rabbit who survived a serious health scare caused by a collapsed lung was well enough to go home just two days later, thanks to the swift care provided by a leading vets in Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>Five-year-old Tristan was admitted to Calder Vets\u2019 animal hospital in Dewsbury suffering from a sudden onset of breathing difficulty and, because he is so small, it was very difficult to see what was wrong on X-rays or ultrasound.<\/p>\n<p>So, under the watchful eye of hospital director, Natalie McQuire, Tristan underwent an emergency CT scan to get to the bottom of the problem.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8936\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8936\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8936 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Tristan-CT-scan.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Tristan-CT-scan.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/Tristan-CT-scan-300x160.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8936\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A marked-up CT scan showing Tristan\u2019s collapsed lung<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Tristan was placed in a transparent oxygen chamber for the procedure, meaning Natalie and her team could obtain the images they needed without any anaesthetic or sedation.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie said: \u201cThe CT scan showed a pneumothorax \u2013 a collapsed right lung, which was surrounded by air. We were able to drain the air to allow the lung to re-inflate and help Tristan&#8217;s breathing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also found a small amount of pus and it is likely the infection was the cause of the initial collapse.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tristan was placed on high doses of antibiotics and after another two days in hospital, he was well enough to go home.<\/p>\n<p>His owner, Caitlin Summers, said: \u201cWe were really worried when Tristan was admitted, but with round-the-clock care, I was able to bring him home three days later.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI have never known of a rabbit to develop a pneumothorax and I am so grateful to Natalie and all the Calder team for looking after him so well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A beloved pet rabbit who survived a serious health scare caused by a collapsed lung was well enough to go home just two days later, thanks to the swift care provided by a leading vets in Yorkshire.
