{"id":8836,"date":"2019-10-09T10:20:41","date_gmt":"2019-10-09T09:20:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/?p=8836"},"modified":"2019-10-09T10:22:40","modified_gmt":"2019-10-09T09:22:40","slug":"vets-shocked-at-skewer-through-dogs-kidney","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/vets-shocked-at-skewer-through-dogs-kidney\/","title":{"rendered":"Vets shocked at skewer through dog&#8217;s kidney"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Vets at a leading practice in Yorkshire were shocked when they carried out an ultrasound on a dog and discovered a skewer impaled through one of her kidneys.<!--more--><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8837\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8837\" style=\"width: 380px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8837\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/injuried-dog-lilly-calder-vets1.jpg\" alt=\"skewer-injured-dog\" width=\"380\" height=\"234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/injuried-dog-lilly-calder-vets1.jpg 436w, https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/injuried-dog-lilly-calder-vets1-300x184.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 380px) 100vw, 380px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8837\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The skewer can be seen in an ultrasound image.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lilly, the nine-year-old Yorkshire terrier, had shown mild gastrointestinal signs for a few weeks prior to the diagnosis at Calder Vets, which has 13 branches across south and west Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<p>She had suffered from intermittent bouts of sickness and diarrhoea with mild abdominal pain but had otherwise remained bright and well.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8840\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8840\" style=\"width: 234px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8840 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/lilly-injurieddog-caldervets-234x300.jpg\" alt=\"skewer-in-kidney-injury\" width=\"234\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/lilly-injurieddog-caldervets-234x300.jpg 234w, https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/lilly-injurieddog-caldervets.jpg 273w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 234px) 100vw, 234px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8840\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The 10 centimetre long skewer and the pierced kidney which had to be removed.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She was brought into Calder Vets\u2019 Dewsbury Hospital one evening after an increase in her abdominal discomfort.<\/p>\n<p>Lilly was found to have a slightly high temperature so was admitted into the hospital for further tests, including an abdominal ultrasound.<\/p>\n<p>Natalie McQuire, lead veterinary surgeon, said: \u201cIt was on this ultrasound scan that the stick could be seen passing through her left kidney.
