Rasping is a form of filing used on animals\u2019 teeth which reshapes an overgrown tooth and also smooths the surface.<\/p>\n<p>He was brought round from the anaesthetic and made such a good recovery he was able to go home the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Veterinary nurse Louise Bardon said: \u201cIt is quite common for the teeth of animals such as chinchillas and rabbits to become overgrown because, unlike us, their teeth are constantly growing.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8828\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8828\" style=\"width: 195px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-8828 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gizmo3-195x300.jpg\" alt=\"gizmo helped by calder vets in yorkshire\" width=\"195\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gizmo3-195x300.jpg 195w, https:\/\/www.caldervets.co.uk\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Gizmo3.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 195px) 100vw, 195px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8828\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Gizmo\u2019s teeth after Calder\u2019s team operated on him.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThe alignment of their teeth and diet play a huge role in ensuring they do not overgrow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor owners who have small animals like Gizmo, our advice is to get regular checks by the vet, look for signs of drooling or discomfort when eating, unexpected weight loss, or dropping food when eating, as all these could indicate overgrown teeth.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNugget style food is best to encourage the necessary \u2018grinding\u2019 of the teeth which will help to wear them down, preventing them from overgrowing.
