Calder Vets Extramural Studies (EMS) Programme
Calder Veterinary Group (CVG) feels strongly that as a profession, we need to improve the way we support our vet students. The quality of EMS that students achieve should not depend on where they see practice but sadly it does! We have all experienced those places where you get shoved in the corner of a consult room and become the practice tea maker for your entire placement.
Not with Calder!!
We want to build bonds with our vet students and make you part of our team. We'd love for you to join us in our practice social events. We hope that you will enjoy working with us so much that you want to join us on our new grad scheme once you graduate.
We understand that it is really hard to be away from home and working in a new place and we want to make that transition as easy as possible. EMS Programme students will be assigned a 'buddy' – a new or recent grad that understands the pressures on you – someone who you can contact at any time during your studies to ask for support and advice. You will also be assigned a mentor – someone who is clinically experienced and can guide you through the training programme and help you learn.
We would encourage students to write action plans and share with these with your mentor either prior to or at the beginning of your placement to ensure you get the most out of your time seeing practice.
We will offer placements in two week blocks – two during 3rd year (Christmas, Easter or Summer), two in fourth year (Christmas, Easter) and then four blocks during final year rotations. Students will be expected to have completed their preparatory EMS already.
You will be placed at one of our operating branches in Wakefield, Brighouse, Waterloo or Mirfield with rotations through the out of hours service and the Tier 3 hospital at Dewsbury. You will also have the opportunity to complete a rotation in our state of the art referral hospital, Paragon Referrals, in a discipline of your choice. We may be able to offer accommodation.
You may be required to complete an interview.
