Facilities at Calder

It is expected that any referral facility will be well equipped and staffed. Calder Vets is no exception to this. We offer a very wide range of services utilising the latest equipment and technology. We also have highly experience and trained clinical staff who can deal with complicated and challenging referral cases. What sets us apart is our friendly, down-to-earth nature and genuine care for our patients. We make every effort to put you and your pet at ease when you come to visit us.

The hospital allows us to cater for any emergency day or night. During normal hours it also provides routine consultations, day patient surgery and offers free nurse clinics and advice.

Parking

There is ample free parking right in front of both the Dewsbury Hospital and the Mirfield Surgery. The Dewsbury Hospital also offers wheelchair access.

Reception and Waiting Room

Our friendly receptionists will retrieve your records prior to your consultation with the vet in one of our seven private air-conditioned consultation rooms. We have spacious clean waiting rooms with separate dog and cat areas. Our record system is fully computerised and shared by all surgeries.

Operating Theatres

We have three large, fully equipped, sterile operating suites, two of which are dedicated to advanced soft tissue and orthopaedic/spinal surgery. We have a wide variety of modern surgical instruments and equipment that allows us to perform many advanced procedures and complex life-saving operations. Special ventilation systems have been installed to reduce the risk of hospital based infections.

Anaesthetics

We use a comprehensive range of modern, safe anaesthetic agents (identical to those used in human hospitals), allowing us to anaesthetise most species of animal from a small hamster to a large dog.  All our surgical patients receive peri-operative analgesics (painkillers) and a trained veterinary nurse monitors the anaesthetic throughout the procedure.  Heart and respiratory monitors (pulse oximetry and capnography) are used for high-risk cases undergoing general anaesthesia.

Imaging and Diagnostic Equipment

The medical equipment we use is all modern, safe and is similar to that used in human hospitals.  We have two imaging suites both with powerful X-Ray machines with digital image capture, allowing assessment of images within seconds. In addition we have two Colour flow Doppler digital ultrasound scanners. Other instruments such as endoscopes, ECG's and blood pressure monitors allow us to diagnose a wide range of serious conditions, again without the need for surgery. We also have a Siemens CT scanner within the hospital which can be used for advanced and complex imaging. The MRI facility regularly visits the hospital.

Laboratories

At the Dewsbury hospital there is a reference standard wet chemistry analyser, blood gas analysis and clotting time analysis on site.  These enable us to quickly diagnose problems at any time of the day or night.  We carry out many pre-anaesthetic blood tests, especially on older animals, to check for any sign of internal disease.  This helps us make sure that their anaesthetic and subsequent recovery are problem free.

Kennels/Wards/Intensive Care Units

We have dedicated dog, cat, rabbit, isolation and intensive care kennels within the hospital. Each ward is entirely separate and under no circumstances will dogs be mixed with cats at any time. None of our cats face each other so that each patient can enjoy a stress free stay. All of our kennels are heated and the rooms air-conditioned. Dogs can be exercised outside in the local park and are always offered to opportunity to toilet on grass. Our feline patients can enjoy the run of an enclosed outdoor area to offer them a bit of exercise during their stay. Our nurses regularly groom, cuddle, feed by hand and play with our patients. Each ward has dedicated nursing staff assigned to it so they can make sure each animal is comfortable during their stay.
