Everyone wants the best possible treatment for their pets. In the past vets have been expected to treat not only all conditions, but all species. As our profession becomes more complicated it is simply impossible for any individual vet to be expert in every field for every species.
More commonly vets are electing to focus on fewer species and within that certain specific types of medicine and surgery. Such vets are expected to undertake extra training gaining plentiful experience in order to be capable in their chosen fields. These vets then take referrals for specific conditions in much the same way that a human medicine general practitioner will refer patients for further investigations, surgery or cancer therapy.
